International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care

International Surgical Week ISW
World Congress of the International Society of Surgery ISS/SIC

The main meeting of IATSIC is in conjunction with the biennial International Surgical Week ISW organized by the International Society of Surgery ISS/SIC. Regularly some 15 - 20 International Specialist Societies, amongst which are the four ISS/SIC Integrated Societies (IATSIC, IAES, BSI, IASMEN) as well as some National Surgical Societies cover the broad spectrum of surgery during a 4-day scientific program. With the aim to gather surgeons in all stages of their career and from all around the globe, the ISW provides platform for the mutual exchange of scientific knowledge and new techniques.

A very successful ISW was held in Adelaide in early September 2009. The IATSIC sessions were very well-attended by a diverse group of international trauma surgeons. The following topics were covered by IATSIC, some in combination with international societies such as AAST, APIMSF, FELAC, ICRC, IASMEN, ISBI,  as well as the Australasian Trauma Society.

  - Damage control vs. definitive repair: has the pendulum swung too far?
  - Metabolic support of injured man
  - Contemporary management of life-threatening wounds
  - Critical techniques for treating the trauma patient at a distance
  - A scientific approach to management of mass-casualty incidents requires involvement of the trauma surgeon
  - Lessons from the battlefield
  - Resuscitation / Hemostasis / Hemostatics
  - Responding to mass casualty: what physicians and surgeons should know
  - Acute care surgery: does it improve outcomes for general surgery and trauma patients?
  - Case studies in complex trauma
  - Historical Lecture
  - Presidential Address
  - Issues specific to critical care

Furthermore, Prizes were awarded for the best Free Paper and Posters presentations. For Prize Winners click here.

A DSTC course was also held in Adelaide just prior to the ISW with a very capable faculty also there to attend the ISW.

We are looking forward to the next IATSIC/ISS meeting to be held in Yokohama in 2011. We look forward to seeing you there and hope that you will begin to consider submitting abstracts for that meeting in about 18 months time… its never too early to commence planning!

Please continue to watch this website for new information as it becomes available.
